Plant Clinics: Mark announced that Terry Jentsch, Master Gardener veteran, has volunteered to serve as the Asotin County Master Gardener Coordinator for the plant clinics this year. Terry reviewed the plant clinic program and procedures for the group stating that the clinics will run as they have in the past with a few changes including:
- Sign-up sheets. There will be an alternate list to use in filling vacancies when any MG has a conflict with their clinic commitment. This should allow enough time for all members to complete their required hours. Once the final sign-up sheet is complete it will be emailed to all members and posted on the web. If a MG is not able to attend, then the alternate list will be used to fill that vacancy. Those signed up for a clinic slot, who find they cannot fulfill that day/time commitment should find their own replacement if at all possible. All substitutions need to be cleared through Terry either by email or phone.
- Members should arrive 10 minutes early on their assigned day to help set up for the clinics.
- The Master Gardener Question Form has been revised to incorporate some new questions that were presented by trainers during the MG training sessions held earlier. The form is not finalized at this point, and if it is the consensus of the group to incorporate other changes, that can be done. Terry would like to hear input about the usefulness of the new format. The changes have been made to help gather more information to help in diagnosis. This will be especially helpful when intakes are done by one person, and the diagnosis done by someone else.
- Advertising: Sue Burrato discussed her sources for advertising the plant clinics, including notices in the local papers and the MoneySaver publication. She will be meeting with her committee to discuss other means of advertising. Advertising flyers will be placed at the area nurseries to advertise the up-coming clinics.
- Terry reminded members that the May 24th plant clinic will be held at Patt’s Nursery from 9:00 am to noon and the Clarkston Farmer’s Market June 7th 9:00 am to noon. It was mentioned that the MG interns will need to complete 20 hours of plant clinic service and the veterans 10 hours.
Fair Booths: Glenda Farrell reported that the Fair Booth and raffle were very successful this year; there was good public interest and the fact sheet was popular. Sue Fitzgerald and Lee Weissenfels sold the most raffle tickets with $125.00 total being sold.
Education Booth: It was announced that the Sun Festival would be held at Vernon Park on June 21 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. The Master Gardener booth would include flyers and the mock-up about how to keep trees healthy.
Arbor Day: Glenda Farrell, Deloris Jungert Davisson and Carol Jones participated in the Arbor Day presentation at Parkway Elementary school on April 23rd. Deloris stated that the locus tree demonstration was made to the student council which included tree identification, the history of the tree, and information about locus bores. For the Arbor Day tree planting, the school used the recommendations of the Master Gardeners and the student council planted maple trees by their soccer field.
Fifth Grade Rendezvous: Ronda Welling, Deloris Jungert Davisson and Jerry Hendricks organized this event by centering on native plants and showing the children how to recognize nut leaf hackenberry and black locus trees. They discussed tree identification and pests that can harm the trees. Rhonda said the bug identification was very popular, but that a better way to view the bugs needs to be set up.
Speaker’s Bureau/Expertise List: Terry Jentsch said the plant clinic gets requests from time to time for Master Gardeners to speak to organizations. If any MG is interested in making a presentation of about 20 minutes, she would like the presentation to first be made to the Master Gardener group and then the presenter’s name could be placed on a list of available speakers that will be disseminated to the public.
Publicity/Marketing: Peggy Browning brought to the group her concerns that there should be more ways to disseminate information to the public about the Master Gardener program and to advertise their events and services. It was decided that the Publicity Committee including Sue Burrato, Ronda Welling and Mary Hasselstrom will meet to discuss a starting point for developing a marketing program.
Committee Reports: Mark reviewed for the new interns that the Master Gardeners have several committees and asked them to volunteer to serve on ones of their interest.
Ronda Welling announced that the “Gardening for Kids” (formerly known as the Jr. Master Gardeners program) will be held July 28th through August1st at Grantham Elementary School. The theme will revolve around habitat, including weather, water, how to start sprouts, containers – how to plant, and composting. She said they will need shoe boxes (with lids), small plants – including succulents that are easy to plant and empty 2 liter plastic bottles. The group’s next meeting will be June 2nd in the MG office at 9:00 am and asked for volunteers to help the week of the program.
Announcements: Deloris Jungert Davisson announced that the Museum of Winchester History’s exhibit “Ordway’s Search for Salmon” is June 1st and invited all Master Gardeners to attend the opening. The exhibit also features a native plant garden.
The meeting adjourned at approximately 2:15 pm.
